Types of Wall Decals: Peel and Stick Wall Decals vs. Vinyl Wall Decals
There are basically two popular forms of wall decals and they are slightly different in the way that they look as well as they way that you apply them on the wall.
Peel and stick wall decals, often times referred to as wall stickers, are really what they sound like. They are usually reusable and you simply peel them off a sheet of paper and stick them on the wall.
On the other hand vinyl wall decals are not re-usable or re-positionable and are usually a bit harder to apply to the wall. There is a clear transfer tape or sheet over the decal that needs to be removed and then you position the decal on the wall and use a scraper-like tool to get a nice even application of the decal.
Vinyl decals usually will cost a bit more than the wall stickers but they tend to last longer and stick better in most cases. Vinyl decals also tend to be higher quality and look more like a hand-painted design rather than more like a sticker or wallpaper application.
Each of these types of wall decals have their pros and cons and it is up to you which one you would rather use.
Some people prefer the simple peel and stick because they can be re-positioned and used again and they won’t take the paint off the walls.
On the other hand some people like the look of the vinyl wall decals and want something that is a bit higher quality and more permanent.
3 Tips for Applying Decals to the Walls
If you have decided on the type of wall decal you want for your baby’s room (these tips can be used for just about any room in your home as well) there are some things to keep in mind so that your decals look the best.
1. Make Sure the Walls Are Clean and Not Freshly Painted
The surface you are going to placing the decals on should be clean, dry, and smooth. This is very important if you want the decal to adhere to the wall properly and not fall off in a short matter of time.
If you have recently painted the walls in the room make sure that you wait at least 2-3 weeks and the paint is completely set before you try to apply any decals. If you don’t wait long enough the decal will not adhere very well and it will just take the paint off with it.
Use a wet cloth or sponge to clean off the wall and make sure it is completely dry before you apply the decals.
2. Plan Ahead for Your Decals Before Applying Them to the Wall
This is especially true for one-time use vinyl wall decals as you want to make sure you are happy where they decal is before you actually apply it onto the wall.
You should always have a plan for your decals before you start applying any of them to wall.
You can use some painter’s tape to hang the decals on the wall or at least use marks with the tape so you know what is even and how large the decal will be once applied on the wall.
It can be exciting to decorate your baby’s room but you want to make sure you are happy with the decor rather than just rushing into it and not being happy with how it turned out.
3. A Credit Cards Works Great for Getting Any Bubbles Out of the Decal
Once you have applied the decal to the wall look at it closely to see if you have any bubbles that need to be smoothed out.
If your decal didn’t come with a squeegee tool then you can simply use a credit card to work the bubbles out of the decal.
Work from the middle out as you slowly push the bubbles out of the decal. Be sure to not rub too hard as you don’t want to rip the decal.
With vinyl decals this step should be done before you remove the paper backing so that the decal doesn’t get ruined. With peel and stick decals you can simply do it once the decal has been stuck on the wall.
Getting all the bubbles out of the design helps it look much better and gives it that even, professional finish.
