Do You Need a Crib Skirt?

crib skirtIf you are a first time mom you may have a few questions about crib bedding and one of those questions may just be “do you need a crib skirt?”

A crib skirt, which can also be refereed to as a crib dust ruffle is the bottom fabric material that hangs down off the bottom of the crib covering the underneath part of the crib.

You will find that most crib bedding sets will include the crib skirt along with the other bedding. If you don’t plan on buying an actual crib bedding set you may be wondering if you really need to buy a crib skirt for your crib.

There are definitely some good reasons why you may want to use a crib skirt but for functionality of the crib you definitely don’t need to have a crib skirt.

If you are considering buying a dust ruffle for your baby’s crib but not really sure yet, here are some reasons why you may want to use one.

1. The crib skirt helps to hide any stuff you may put underneath the crib.

If you have a small room or you simply just want to utilize as much room as possible, you may use underneath the crib for storing baby items like extra blankets or extra diapers. You can find baskets or plastic bins that will slide under the crib and can work great for storing extra items.

If you do this, the crib skirt can be a great way to hide these items under the crib so you don’t have to look at them.

2.  The crib skirt makes the crib look nicer when the mattress is at the higher levels.

When your little one is just born you will most likely have the mattress at the highest level so you can easily get baby in and out of the crib. This means that the bottom support underneath the mattress will most likely be visible. If you don’t want to look at the metal support underneath the mattress, a crib skirt is a great way to make it look a lot nicer.

As your baby gets older and you lower the mattress to the lowest level the crib skirt isn’t as necessary for this reason as the wood frame will most likely cover the metal support, but it still can be used for other reasons.

3. A crib skirt gives the crib a aesthetic appearance.

Of course this is personal opinion but having a crib dust ruffle underneath the mattress does help give the crib a more pleasing appearance on the eyes and helps to just add some color and style to the crib.

Just like some people prefer to use bed skirts and others don’t like the appearance of them, some people will prefer the look of the crib skirt while others may not think it is necessary at all.

If you are worried about money, you don’t have to spend a lot of money on a crib skirt. In fact you can find a nice, plain colored¬† crib skirt for under $15.

If you are handy with a sewing machine or know someone that is, you can even make your own crib skirt for much less money.

Although a crib skirt is definitely not a must-have for your baby’s crib, there are valid reasons why you may just want to buy one for your baby’s room.
